The Central Valley Hispanic Youth Symposium
Fresno State University | July 20-23, 2010

The Program

The Hispanic Youth Symposium will bring 100 students to local college for a three-night, four-day program to change the way the students think about their futures as college graduates, career professionals, and community volunteers.

The agenda for the symposium is filled with exciting and moving classes, workshops, and networking opportunities. By the end of the program, students who participate in the Central Valley Hispanic Youth Symposium will have:

  • Confidence in their ability to achieve a college education and professional career.
  • A clear understanding of the necessary steps for college application and financial aid.
  • A network of mentors and role models from the business community.
  • A comfort level/familiarity with life on a college campus.
  • A network of like-minded peers who also want to achieve a college education and professional career.
  • An understanding of the importance of community service.
  • An understanding of career options in the business, science, technology, engineering, and math arenas.

The Hispanic Youth Symposium targets students who demonstrate leadership potential; have a minimum 2.5 GPA; complete an online application from this website; and are members of the classes of 2012 and 2013.

Program highlights include:

  • Workshops on how to prepare for, apply to, and finance college - taught by college admissions counselors!
  • Career workshops that introduce students to engineering, science, math, and more!
  • “Issues to Action” - Workshops focusing on the role of community involvement and public policy with competitions and prizes for actionable solutions
  • $10,500 in scholarship monies - Awarded to winners of the art competition, talent competition, and speech competition! (Participation is not mandatory.)
  • “Hispanic Heroes” - Breakout group meetings with Hispanic role models from the community. 90% of symposia attendees leave the program with a mentor!
  • College and career fair

How do we do it? With lots of volunteers, a proven program, and the help of “near peer” college resident advisors who work with the students in small groups of familias - student families.
