Office of Economic Impact and Diversity Announces Recipients of the U.S. Department of Energy 2005 EEO/Diversity Best Practices Awards
The Office of Economic Impact and Diversity is pleased to announce the recipients of the Department’s 2005 EEO/Diversity Best Practices Awards. These awards are designed to recognize outstanding initiatives which support Secretary Samuel W. Bodman’s commitment to EEO and diversity at DOE. Please join us in congratulating the award recipients. Their continued commitment to EEO/Diversity is proven through the innovative programs they have designed.
The recipients are:
- OFFICE OF HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT for its Greater Washington D.C. Hispanic Youth Symposium. The Symposium recruits Hispanic youth for a 3-day program promoting leadership development, volunteerism, academic achievement, and self-esteem. It has been cited by OPM as a best practice, and has been recognized by the White House, which hosted a briefing for 200 attendees in 2005. (This program was originally nominated by the Chief Financial Officer.)
- RICHLAND OPERATIONS OFFICE for its Native American Cultural Resources and Student Internship Program. The program is designed to enhance relations with three local tribes by providing them with a single point of contact for information, grantee applications, Hanford Advisory Board processes, and numerous government protocols.
- ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY for its Science Careers in Search of Women Program. For the past 18 years, Argonne has sponsored this program. Approximately 350 high school females and 60 teachers/counselors attend annually from nearly 60 Chicago-area schools. The program provides an opportunity for attendees to interact with positive female role models in science.
- SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES for its Diversity Cinema Program. Since April 2001, Sandia National Laboratories has hosted the monthly Diversity Cinema during lunch hour. The program convenes participants to view videos on diversity issues, with time to discuss the issues in a group setting. Videos are also loaned out, on request. Response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive.
- OFFICE OF HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT for its Walter Reed Wounded Soldiers Project. This program is designed to expose wounded soldiers to job opportunities within the Federal government, and to match soldiers to the right career opportunity. (This program was originally nominated by the Chief Financial Officer.)
These organizations will also be recognized at the upcoming EEO/Diversity & Human Resources Symposium, scheduled to take place in the Washington, D.C., area in 2006. Our congratulations to the award recipients.
